Pro Acarologia Basiliensis (PAB)

This foundation (“Stiftung PAB”) was founded by the Swiss acarologist Carl Bader (Basel, 1910-1997) and is dedicated to the development of acarological research. PAB gives special regard to fields inappropriately neglected in the public interest (in particular museum-relevant taxonomic and systematic studies). A focus is directed to funding of research on mites in aquatic habitats, but also studies on terrestrial mites are supported. Collections built up with grants of the foundation are included in the acarology repart of the Museum of Natural History at Basel.

PAB gives support:

  1. to long term projects by two year grants, especially suitable for PhD and postgraduate projects;
  2. to short term activities such as study trips, congress participations, courses;
  3. to the acquisition of equipment.

The acceptance of requests is decided by the PAB council, eventually after discussion with external referees.

Applications:

Due to financial reasons applications for the next round of long term projects must be postponed to 2017. You will find more detailed informations here in due time.

Requests for occasional short term grants (e.g. for congress travel costs, journeys for field work, teaching and learning in acarological courses, acquisition of equipment) can not be presented before September 2015. They should roughly follow the scheme given above under "Further procedure", thus, presented in detail, not introduced by a project outline. In view of our limited resources, also in these cases projects with a reduced budget (e.g. due to cofinancing) will be preferred. For decision-making of the council, a time span of three months should be calculated.

Systematics of oribatid mites (Acari) in Pampas Region, mid-eastern Argentina

Dr. Pablo A. Martínez. Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences, National University of Mar del Plata, Argentina. Funes 3350, 7600 Mar del Plata, Argentina, pamartin@mdp.edu.ar

Pro Acarologia Basiliensis Scholarship: Acarologia Basiliensis Scholarship: 2006-2007

The aim of this work was to improve the knowledge of soil oribatid mites in Pampas Region, mid-eastern Argentina. For this, three main geomorphologic zones were recognized: Hills, Eolian Fringe and Fluvio-eolian Plain. In each of them, soils with and without antropic impact were sampled. Fauna was obtained by Berlese funnels, and oribatid mites were identified at species level. A total of eight sites were analyzed. For each site, an oribatid list was elaborated. As results, around 130 oribatid species were recorded. An interactive key of those taxa was developed. A comparison among faunal richness by area and site was made. There is a group of previously known species, cosmopolitan or widely distributed species, who is present in a great number of sites. However, are local differences in faunal composition. A dozen of species new to science were found. There was a change of oribatid species composition in the west border of the region, near other biogeographic region called Espinal. In sites devoted to agriculture species richness was strongly depleted.

Aut- and synecological studies on spring-living water mites from the Alps

The subject of the granted postdoc-project was the larval morphology and the parasite-host associations of water mites (Hydrachnidia, Acari) from springs in the German National Park of Berchtesgaden. The study was embedded in a still enduring long-term project on the spring fauna of the Park. For more than 20 species the larval morphology could be described for the first time, a determination key could be composed and thus the hosts for many of that species could be investigated. The project enabled for the first time to clarify the parasitic part of the life cycle of spring living water mites. The breeding of the larvae and the preparation of the parasitic mites produced many slides which will be deposited in the MNH Basel after the final analysis. An additional part of the grant was the composition of a database on the yet known larval morphology and hosts of water mites of the West-Paläarctis. Parts of the database are published within the web pages www.watermite.org, a written publication is in preparation. The grant qualified the demy for the following work on a similar project on mites from spring in Luxemburg and by this finally a scientific employment up to now.

In the course of a postdoctorate project, about 4000 water mites from nearly 300 sample sites in Costa Rica were investigated, in total about 800 preparations were made. All together 42 species of the genus Torrenticola were found in Costa Rica, 36 new species were described, descriptions of eleven known species were revised. Keys to all 57 neotropical species were prepared and ten species groups described. Our knowledge on the neotropical torrenticolid fauna has reached a new level, as the number of species known from Costa Rica has increased tenfold, from the whole Neotropics nearly threefold. The robust system of species groups is useful in particular for the handling of large collections from poorly known regions, as is facilitates a coarse sorting and a fast and secure identification of undescribed species.

Reaktionen und Veränderungen der Gamasidenfauna (Acari, Arachnida) auf forstwirtschaftliche Waldumbaumaßnahmen in Nordostdeutschland

Reactions of the gamasid fauna (Acari, Arachnida) to changing forestry methods in north-eastern Germany

Dipl. LÖNS Annett Wegener, E.-M.-A.-Universität Greifswald, Zoologisches Institut und Museum, J.-S.-Bachstr. 11/12, D-17489 Greifswald, Germany, E-Mail: AnnettWegener@gmx.net

The grant provided by the Pro Acarologia Basiliensis supports a doctoral thesis. Over a period of two years the gamasid mite communities of 14 different forest sites of two investigation areas in the lowlands of North-eastern Germany were observed. The main research focussed on the recording of their response to changes of habitat structures, especially the soil quality, in the course of changing forestry methods by introducing common beech to pure pine forests to create more natural-like mixed deciduous and coniferous woodlands. The results show that this process has a strong influence on the structures of the gamasid mite communities, whereas they have a higher similarity to the natural Baltic beech woodlands, when the beech is introduced in the pine monocultures very early. At the same time this work made a contribution to the recording of the regional biodiversity in the forests of North-eastern Germany. Presently, the gamasid mite material of the collection of J. Schweizer in the Museum of Natural History in Basel is revised and compiled in a data base.

After finishing the doctoral thesis, the consequences of windthrow events in the “National Park  Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft” and the “Müritz National Park” will be investigated in detail. In the planning state is a co-operation project, which will be focussed on the recording of the gamasid fauna and other animal groups in a walnut forest area in Kirgyzstan.

Considering the increasing tourism in the Antarctic there is currently an investigation to estimate the risk of translocate mesofauna and plant spores by shoes of participants of cruises to the Antarctic during shore leaves.
